Reporters in the line of fire

Is it worth endangering ones' life to get the scoop?

I definitely don't think that a story can be that good of a truth the endanger one's life. I mean we see reporters in their line of duty and yes I've seen news where the situation that they're in is dangerous. They might have reported the best story of the year, but what if in the future more serious situations like these happen and they won't be able to live long enough to celebrate because they had no chance in surviving the attack. I respect the job of a reporter. I mean they are the reason why we see daily news about different countries around the world. But to risk your life or someone else's life is just not worth it for me. Media itself is already ruining people's life. With all the gossips and rumors at times you don't even know if it's true. Celebrities go through it everyday. Taking pictures, shoving a mic infront on your face, would'nt you get pissed off? We don't see other people shoving a mic at a reporters face seeing the little things they've done wrong.

Although the video shown and Celebrities are differnt it goes both ways that reporters shouldn't need to handle that much of a situation. They're job is to tell the story. Not serve justice. I can see it from the person's view and I would get irritated myself. After you've told someone to leave you alone a good once or twice, and they don't wouldn't they be disrespecting your privacy? Everyone needs space. If the situation is like the video and some person throws a tantrum on them the first, the reporters should be smart enough to bring other people who can handle it in a more proffession kind of way. The reporter got off lucky. Some serious things can be done if a man is in a wild rage.

Reading in CyberSpace

  1. I believe that Google will have some good and bad relationships with different types of publishers. They've already had bad ones with five publishers. These five publishers sued Google Book Search because of "massive copyright infringement". Others might only have "good" relationships with Google because they might want some profit if his or her books are published.

  2. As far as I know, Google's competitors (Yahoo,Msn,Microsoft, etc) hasn't made any big response as to Google's Book Search. Google is known for their search engine. That's what it's main purpose is for. Google's competitors has their own different purposes. Yahoo and Msn also has search engines so to add up a book search, to me, I don't think would make a big arguement between them.

  3. I think that this project is a great new way to access information. You won't have to always travel to the library to gain access of books. I also think that it may be a bit quicker than reading a book in the library. This being because you could search for a phrase or a word in a book and depending on the access you can get on the book, it will show it to you. It makes it much quicker to find the information you're actually looking for instead of having to read a whole book until you can actually find that. It's more efficient.

  4. I don't think that they'll be threatened. I mean even though Google has made much more easier for readers, I believe that libraries will always be one of the main sources. Some people may not be good at computers so the google book search may not be right for them. And so this is where they turn to libraries. So no, I don't think that librarians will be much threatened.

  5. In my opinion, I do think that Google Book Search is a good, smart, and very effiecent idea. It's a great way for students to accomplish their projects or homework staying at one place. This way you'll have books just a click away. But for some reason as much as I do like the Google Book Search I think that the library would be my first source of books. If then I don't find what I need, Google Book Search will come after that.

Are Wii the Children of Revolution?

In my honest opinion I think that like any other gaming system,Wii is just a hype. With all the technologies, these marketers are just trying to sell their product. Although may not be a gamer, I don't think that a game system such as Wii is a revolution. I'll admit that when it first came out, I was really excited. I mean who wouldn't be. A system that allows you to play freely. How awesome is that? But if you really think of it, it all comes down to 'it's just a game'. To me, Wii is a game system that's gotten better. But the thing is, What game system hasn't gotten better? Look at Playstation's evolution - Playstation 1,2&3. Gameboys have been re-invented to get more sales. Gameboy to DS. Wii is just another evolution of a game system. One thing they do have in common is that it's just a game. Some people might think that Wii is like one of the greatest inventions because it's for all ages. That doesn't make it a revolution either, for years game systems have always been for all ages. No matter what age you are, all types of game systems was available for you to use. Sooner or later another game invention will be created. The problem with this evolution of game system is that the more better they get, the more the children will want to stay home. I've heard that game systems are parts of the reason why some kids are unhealthy and gaining weight. All they do is stay home and just glue their eyes to the screen. No exercise or any activity is being consumed.Overall, Wii is not revolution. It's just another evolution that will later on be forgotten because there will be a new invention, and I garuntee that.

The Genographic Project

The National Geographic Society along with IBM have launched the Genographic Project, a five-year effort to understand our place of origin and to better understand how we became so diverse. This project is to allow geneticists like Spencer Wells to prove that we all share common ancestors and that our orginal roots extend to African Ancestors. Our Genetic Markers, a DNA chain that remain laregly intact through the generations, can help them do just that.

Getting DNA will be kind of hard because of the mixed generations. They might not get the strongest DNA that orginated from one culture. This is why idigeneous groups are very important during the process of this project;Their ethnic and genetic identities are isolated. This is also why the timing of this project is important. If we would've started this later on the future there not might be any oringal DNA to really help confirm things. It's too bad that geneticists couldn't have done this earlier in the years. If they only had the correct technology and more information. I think that it would've been more successful because back in the day, our society wasn't as mixed up as it is now. But without the technology back then and the lack of original DNA in the future, what better time then to do it just now.We have enough of everything, to conduct a thorough research.

We can simply help with the project by consuming a Participation kit. One of the many things this kit carries is a swab kit. This is a painless procedure to take our DNA. You just simply to a cheek swab to acquire your DNA. Next you just mail your cheeck swab to one of the 10 labs around the world, wherever you are. After you can just go on the Genographic website and track your test kit and from there you are able to explore some of which are you earliest relatives.

An iPod Classroom

  1. I think that using an ipod, as a learning strategy is a great new way of learning. Some of us may not understand things right away so by using the ipod, we can easily go back and replay a seminar. The ipod learning system is great because we can be learning on the go. Whether we are taking a vacation or just on a transit, we have our ipod's and we can listen and learn whenever and wherever. We're taking the learning system to a whole new level. Now we have no excuse to say that we didn't go to the seminar cause we can easily take it from the Internet and into our ipod's. This is a great idea for people who are very eager to learn and willing to work at a fast pace. In other hands, those who don't grasp things very well can repeat the seminar over and over until they understand. In my opinion I could only learn well to an extent. I will probably do well on and off. The reason being is although the ipod has a different learning strategy, it will not make a difference if you're not willing to learn. I can admit that I'll probably doze off and daydream while listening to a seminar. Like any other people you can't force someone to learn and be excited. Sure it's a new way of learning but if you're not interested in the topic, what makes it so sure that you're going to learn? I think that it is a matter of being determined in learning.

  2. I think that Mary Ward's system of self-directed learning is already somewhat like the ipod system. By this I mean that Mary Ward already gives us the freedom to go to any class we want. Our seminars are repeated through the week so to embrace such technology, to me, would be kind of pointless. I'm not so sure if all high school students are willing enough to put a seminar or lecture into their ipod's. The ipod's at school today are used to listen to music. Some people tend to work better when listening to music. In my experience I do like listening to music while working. The disadvantage of this technology in Mary Ward would be that fewer students would be coming in class. Now that the seminars can be held anywhere they want then there's no point in coming to class. All teachers would be seeing their students fewer times. On the other hand having this technology at our school would mean that we wouldn't ever have to miss a seminar again. Some of us tend to miss seminars and we get confused while doing the unit. This technology would make that problem disappear. No one at Ward would ever miss another seminar again.

With the Good Comes the Bad

Communication technology has given us both negative and positive influences. An example of communication technology is the internet. Many people use internet for many different reasons. These reasons could include: blogging, research, email/chat rooms, different sources of information for work/school/maps and the list goes on. As a student, internet is one of the sources I rely on for help. I use it for school work when I am asked to do a research on different types of subjects. I also use internet as a way of entertainment. Downloading music and music videos. It is where I go if ever I have nothing else to do. Another way I use internet for is chatting. A source like msn messenger or yahoo are some the chat sites I go to chat with my friends and family. Chatting has been a good way of communication to reach out to long distance family or friends. We are able to chat with the them, talk to them through the mic, and view them through webcam all at the same time. As much as there are plenty more exciting stuff you could find in the internet there are also negative affects of internet. Our information placed on sites could be hacked and be use for other reasons. Internet is one of the many ways why people get stalked and abused. Though there are websites where you can place your personal information, pictures and ways of contact, there are people out there that use that kind of information to stalk you that are capable of kidnapping you and in a worse case senario, kill you. Another downfall about the internet is the fact that you are able to download songs from artists or movies that are still previewing in the movie theatres. To you it may sound like a nice deal and you have a bonus of not paying for it. But for those artists and actresses they are getting robbed. They've worked hard into making what they've done whether it be music or movies. They expect the customers to buy there product so that they are able to make money off it and produce more of their products. Internet has given us a wide range variety of many things. There are good and bad ways to use internet and it is up to the user to make that choice.
